Group Banners on Desktop vs. Mobile
It’s tricky to design your cover photo to display properly on both mobile and desktop. Designing with “safe zones” will get you a Facebook group header that looks great on all devices!
Facebook doesn’t stretch and distort your image to fit different devices – it crops it automatically instead.
On a mobile device, your group cover photo will be seen in its entirety.
But on a desktop device, Facebook will crop the top and bottom.
Using the Facebook cover photo size of 1640 pixels by 856 pixels and keeping critical elements within safe zones will ensure that nothing important gets cut off on desktop.
Follow these screenshots to walk you through the easy design process.
Choose the Facebook Group cover photo preset for a perfect cover photo size – automatically!
Next, choose a premade Facebook Cover template (which is fully customizable), or create a cover photo from scratch.
Even if you use a template, you can upload your own image – or choose from Snappa’s library of free images.
Add text, graphics, shapes, and effects to any part of the image.
All of these add-ons can be:
- Dragged and dropped easily.
- Defined as to the opacity you desire.
- Placed on whichever layer you choose.
You’ll notice that the overlay showing the mobile-only zones of your Facebook cover so you’ll never have to worry about text and graphics getting cut off. ?
You can easily toggle this on and off. Once your design is complete, transform your new Group Cover Photo into any other image type!

What Facebook says about Group Cover Photo size
According to Facebook, the ideal size is 1,640px by 856px, or 1.91:1 ratio. This did not work anywhere on November 27, 2017. But now it does – on mobile.
Although it’s actually 1,640px by 859px! Not sure why they state 856, which isn’t exactly 1.91:1, nor what displays.
After changing on November 27, Facebook changed cropping on mobile again in early December. I updated the post and template.
You can simply use 1,640px by 859px, or 1.91:1 ratio, which will work fine on both phones and tablets. Facebook no longer places text overlay across the bottom on mobile.
Allow cropping top and bottom on desktop. Facebook isn’t allowing full control over the cropping on desktop. A portion of the top and bottom will be cropped.
These dimensions have been verified to work as of February 7, 2019.
Facebook now provides a similar template. But keep reading as we can do this one better.
Facebook Group thumbnail previews
Where does the FB Group thumbnail preview come from?
Have you noticed the little circle preview when you look for groups?
Some previews communicate at a glance, and others are a little messy and confusing.
So how do you get the best group preview circle?
It’s actually quite easy. The preview is grabbed from the center of your banner.
Use my new template below to preview your preview!
Here are tips for designing your header image, so you get the best thumbnail:
- Keep it simple! That’s the best and easiest way to go.
- Center something that communicates at a glance. Don’t make it slightly off-center.
- Cut additional text, or make it much smaller, so your main message stands out.
Read on for examples.
Not-quite-centered Facebook Group thumbnail preview
Thumbnail shown first above, full Cover Photo below.
This one works, as its preview does communicate effectively.
However I think it would be improved if it were perfectly centered.
Simple but effective Facebook Group thumbnail preview
Thumbnail shown third above, full Cover Photo below. Sometimes you can’t beat simplicity!
I personally would have come closer on the mug for better readability at a small size.
And I think the photo could benefit from some brightening up, as it’s a bit dull.
But it works! BTW, the template is yet below, so keep going.
For experts only! Facebook Group thumbnail preview
Want more of your cover photo included in your preview? Upload a taller image!
The circle will be grabbed from the full height of your header. Be aware that more of the height will be cropped out of your cover photo on BOTH mobile and desktop!
The preview from this image is shown 4th in the lineup at the top of this section.
Here’s your Facebook Group Cover Photo template for 2019!
This new template:
- Is the recommended width of 1640 pixels.
- Is the recommended proportion of 1.91:1.
- Shows where that group thumbnail will be extracted.
Since Facebook isn’t allowing full control over the cropping on desktop, this template shows a default center crop.

I can’t set the right size for my Facebook Group Cover Photo!
IF you’ve looked at the easy solution above, but insist on persisting…
If your preferred design tool doesn’t allow you to set pixel size, look for a “Facebook Link Preview” size, or a 1.91:1 shape. This is the same proportion, or aspect ratio.
No go? You can find a 16:9 cropping template in any photo editing app, even free ones, like Photos on iOS.
If you go with Facebook’s suggested width of 1640, it’ll be 923 pixels tall.
Be aware that only 859 pixels of the height will show on mobile, and 662 on desktop. So you’ll lose a smidge off the top and bottom.
Remember that the circle will enlarge to the full height you upload, though!
Persistence is futile? Try Snappa!

How do I upload a cover photo to my group?
Now this info from Facebook works, for the most part, though I disagree with their size.
Admins can upload or change cover photos for their group.
To upload a cover photo for the first time:
- Click Upload Photo to upload a photo from your computer or click Choose Photo to choose from your Facebook photos or your group’s photos.
- Click Save Changes.
Keep in mind that the recommended size for group cover photos is 1,640px by 856px (or 1.91:1 ratio). To change an existing cover photo, hover over the photo and click Change Group Photo.
Note: If the cover photo has never been set, group members may also be able to add a cover photo. If a group member sets the cover photo for a group, and later decides they would like to remove it, they will need to delete the photo in order to remove it as the group cover photo. source
Facebook Group Cover Photo display sizes
Here are the current sizes as measured on my devices, plus the previous sizes I saw on Nov. 27, 2017:
On desktop: 1025 x 415, which is a 2.47:1 aspect ratio. This has not changed since November.
On iPhone 7 Plus: 1242 x 650 or 1.91:1. WAS 1242 x 698, which is 1.78:1 ratio (or 16:9).
On iPad: 1192 x 624 or 1.91:1. WAS 1192 x 440, about 2.6:1.
Facebook Group Cover Photo problems?
Please remember that Facebook cover photos crop differently on desktop and mobile. There is simply NO one-size-fits-all solution.
My article on FB business page covers gives more detail on this confounding problem. It’s all about aspect ratio.
